Social Committee

The CPA Social Committee produces events that help CPA members and their families to integrate into the larger Caltech community. We do this through our monthly social hours, the annual CPA BBQ, and regular theatre and concert trips.

Monthly CPA Social Hour
The CPA social hours are from 5.30pm onwards, on the first Friday of every month, in the Central Rec. Room of the Catalinas (Map). If you're signed up for CPA mailings you'll receive reminders of these and notification of changes to the time/location. The monthly social hours are a great opportunity to come and meet other CPA members in a relaxed, pleasant atmosphere with plenty of free food and drink provided. Bring the whole family!

Annual CPA BBQ
There will be catered food (Mesquite BBQ) with vegetarian options, drinks, kids games, a raffle with lots of great prizes and much more! (View past CPA BBQ's)

Theatre, Opera and Concert trips
These trips are arranged by Claire Newman (theater trips) and Diana Stefanescu (opera and concert trips).

Most trips include:

• guaranteed transport there and back
• reduced ticket prices
• the opportunity to meet / socialize with other CPA members.

Recent theatre trips have included Ibsen's "The Master Builder", Mamet's "Romance" at the Mark Taper Forum, and Rodgers and Hammerstein's "The Sound of Music" at The Glendale Centre Theatre. Recent opera trips have included Puccini's "Madam Butterfly" and Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro", both at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in downtown LA.

Please contact Diana to be added to the CPA concert and opera trips mailing list. Contact Claire if you would like to join the theater mailing list, or if you have a suggestion for a future outing! All other trips are advertised in the weekly CPA mailings.

Annual CPA Halloween Party
The first CPA Halloween party was held in Dabney Hall and Gardens last year, and an amazingly large number of imaginative and terrifying costumes were on display as we danced to every horrifying tune we could get our claws (I mean hands) on. Please the social committe in October if you'd like to get involved with set decorations or the lighting and sound systems for this year's event!

Other Activities
We hope to begin arranging some new outdoor activities in the near future, such as gentle hikes in the foothills, a trip to Antelope Valley, or trips to other beautiful spots such as the Descanso Gardens. Please contact Mike Haslam or Herwig Just if you are interested in going or helping to arrange these outings.

In the past we have also arranged paintball games, mini-golf trips, and so forth, and we would like these trips to continue this year. Please contact Nigel Richards if you would be interested in going along or helping to arrange such outings. Or you can the social committe to suggest a new outing!

Get involved!
If you would like to get more involved in CPA social activities, why not join the social committee? Simply helping to set up before / clear up after a few social hours is a very important contribution, or if you have more time you may want to combine your interests with the CPA's by arranging a trip or activity for a group of members. Please the social committe for more information.
