Caltech’s Human Resources department has a very
useful web site dedicated to international scholars,
which includes information on the most common visa classes
and international travel regulations. Here are a few other
useful links:
The goal of the ESL/Conversation Club for Spouses
is to promote friendship, foster community and to provide spouses
of international postdocs with a place to gather and practice
their English in a relaxed setting. It is open to all foreign
nationals in the Caltech community. A certified instructor
is present to provide ESL instruction, and you can also sign
up for a 'conversation partner' from the Pasadena community
to meet with at a convenient time and place. Children are always
welcome. The club normally meets on Thursdays from 4:30pm to
6:00pm in a room on the first floor of 195 S. Hill Avenue.
For further information please contact club coordinator Andy
Pearce.
People always crave some food or snack from their home country
that is not available in regular American grocery stores. We
have compiled a list of stores that might help you out - it
is not an exhaustive list, but should get you started. A number
of these places are not in Pasadena, but they are worth the
drive and will encourage you to explore the greater L.A. area.
- Cost Plus
World Markets - in addition to cool household and kitchen
furnishings these stores have a great international foods
section (mostly good for some European foods - particularly
at Christmas and other holidays when you're looking for
specific items).
- Trader Joe's -
chain grocery store that specializes in carrying a variety
of international foods (there is one at Del Mar and Lake
Ave)
- Yinkus African & Caribbean
Market - 869 E. Washington Blvd, Pasadena (626-798-5212)
- Ngoma
Restaurant - currently the only pan-African restaurant
in Los Angeles
- Little Ethiopia is located along Fairfax Avenue near the
Miracle Mile, between Olympic and Pico Boulevards. The area
is filled with Ethiopian businesses and restaurants, as well

ancestry. Check out the Ethiopian
Community Association website for a list of businesses
and community information.
- 99 Ranch Market -
Chinese supermarket chain
- The Bamboo Tea House -
in Pasadena
- Marukai Market -
if you go to the main store in Gardenia, it is a crazy big
place that sells groceries, dishes, kitchen stuff, clothing,
furniture - you name it! It's a real adventure. You need
to get a membership (at the door) in order to shop, but it's
very cheap.
- Thai Town is located on Hollywood Blvd,
between Western & Vermont.
It's roughly bounded by Hollywood, Normandy, Melrose, Western.
It is home to a number of restaurants and Thai markets, and
host to a big Thai New Year's Festival. You can take
the Metro rail or bus from Pasadena (get off at the Hollywood/Western
stop on the red line).
- The "Little
Tokyo" part of town is located in downtown Los
Angeles, in the area around the Japanese
American Cultural & Community Center.
- Koreatown is
located just north of Hollywood, near Thai Town. It
has many Korean grocery stores, restaurants and nightclubs.
- A Caltech student has
posted some leads for people seeking out Caribbean
food and groceries. Most places are in Inglewood, along
Crenshaw Blvd.

markets
- Papa Cristo's -
Greek deli/market and restaurant
- Rose
Tree Cottage - Pasadena British tea room and shop
- Tudor House -
British tea room, bakery and dry goods store in Santa Monica

and gourmet shop at the Los Angeles Farmer's Market (the
market and the adjacent Grove are very cool places to visit
in general)
- All of the major grocery stores have a decent section of
Jewish food, especially Gelson's
- Little Israel --- a part of town with Jewish restaurants
and markets --- is located on Fairfax Avenue between Melrose
and Beverly in Los Angeles. It is also home to many Russian
shops and restaurants.

specialty items
